Who are we?

The Wind Orchestra is a fully non-auditioned ensemble, so if you play wind, brass, percussion, string bass or even fancy trying a bit of conducting, why not give Wind Orchestra a try? We are a friendly bunch of people who enjoy performing and socialising together in a group.

From modern film and show tunes to more traditional repertoire, the Wind Orchestra play a wide variety of music, so there is sure to be something in the folder to suit your tastes. Our rehearsals are held on Monday evenings from 6:00-8:30pm in various rooms in the Arts Centre. We also have four small ensembles; Feeling Saxy, Liquorice Sticks, Flute Choir and Duck Duck Goose, so there are plenty of opportunities to get involved!

Events, Concerts and Opportunities

During the year, we host several concerts both on and off campus, including performing in the Arts Centre's prestigious Butterworth Hall. We also compete in the National Concert Band Festival annually. On top of this, we regularly organise workshops for our members that range from arranging to conducting and have been delivered by famous names such Phil Shotton and Wissam Boustany. The opportunities don't end there; we also have a Beginner's Wind programme that allows members to teach or learn an instrument from scratch!

The best way to get to know everyone in Wind Orchestra better is through our socials! In addition to our frequent visits to the Dirty Duck, we have a wide variety of other activities. Examples of these are film/quiz and pizza nights, the annual Music Centre Ball, a trip to see a musical and pub golf with other music societies. We also have yearly trips to showcase our talents outside of the University. Our most recent biennial tour of Europe has taken us to Cologne, and we have previously visited Vienna, Strasbourg, Munich, and Budapest! We also have regular mini-tours to engage our members in much musical merriment across the UK.
